Our Projects

Our club participates in a variety of projects throughout the year that involve fundraising, community service, and assisting children locally and worldwide.  Additionally, we have speakers at our weekly meetings to explore topics of interest to the membership. We engage in a number of social activities to share experiences, talents and our collective interests. All represent great opportunities for service, friendships and personal growth.

Below are just some of the many projects and activities in which we are currently involved:

LobsterFest – this is one of our most important fundraisers and is usually held in May. It attracts 500+ participants and features a Silent Auction, entertainment and of course scrumptious lobster (and chicken for the lobster challenged). All proceeds generated from our fundraising efforts are returned directly to support child and youth programs in the community. Today’s youth are the leaders of tomorrow. We believe our community must provide all children the opportunity for reaching their full potential. Many hands are needed and Club members sell tickets, prepare food, serve meals, obtain sponsors, and run a Silent Auction.

Kiwanis Music Festival – its mission is to encourage and promote the enjoyment and study of music in our community’s young people through the production of an annual competitive music festival. Our Club members volunteer at various venues to help the Festival which is usually held in April.  We staff the registration desk, welcome and give encouragement to the performers while having the opportunity to listen to the incredible talent.

Aktion Club – this is the only service club for adults with disabilities. Volunteers meet at the gathering roughly once every five weeks and chat with the guests. Our Club members then serve food, including cake that brings smiles to the faces, followed by entertainment for the group.

In From The Cold – the purpose of this initiative is to provide an opportunity for people of Parkdale United Church, volunteers from the wider community, and guests experiencing poverty or other challenges to come together in a safe place with loving hospitality, respect and dignity. Club members assist by serving meals to the guests two or three times a year.

Children’s Miracle Network Trivia Night – this event raises funds for critical treatments and healthcare services, pediatric medical equipment and research for our local children’s hospitals. Our Club provides volunteers to help with this large trivia event held in November that attracts over 1,000 contestants.

Queen Elizabeth Public School – the school hosts a Kiwanis “Terrific Kids” program for all levels in which they participate and are awarded. Our Club participates in their fundraising efforts preparing check sheets and serving pizza every other Friday. We also help with sports events, winter games and chaperoning students to the library, tournaments, etc.

Fashion FUNraiser – held in November, this fashion show provides an opportunity to shop in preparation of the holiday season with the venue giving a percentage of the sales to our Club for disbursement to a selected organization. Club members sell tickets and some are selected to be models while other members supply, set up and serve the refreshments.

Christmas Breakfast – this is the Club’s special holiday event. Members from other Kiwanis clubs are invited. A guest speaker and sometimes entertainment by a Kiwanis Music Festival participant are featured. Prior to the breakfast, a group of Club members gather to prepare bags of toiletries that are given to a local charity for distribution to the homeless.

Santa Souper Singers – this fun evening is usually on the second Friday in December where a group of members from Ottawa West and other clubs go from bar to bar dressed up in Christmas garb, singing Christmas Carols and collecting money for the Ottawa Food Bank.
